This Wednesday, the 22nd, the European Commission anticipated “very difficult months and years” due to the current energy crisis caused by the conflict in the Middle East, admitting pressure on aviation fuel and concern regarding European Union (EU) tourism.
“We have to be very clear and direct in the way we describe the kind of crisis we are in now (because) this is not a small short-term price increase, this is a crisis that is probably as serious as the one in 1973 and the one in 2022 combined, and this means that we face very difficult months, or perhaps even years, depending of course on developments in the Middle East,” said European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in Brussels.
Speaking at a press conference, on the day the institution presented a set of measures to tackle the energy crisis caused by the war in Iran started by US and Israeli attacks, Dan Jørgensen pointed out that aviation “is currently the sector under the greatest pressure”, given the obstacles to kerosene.
“We are fully aware that our economies depend on our ability to fly. Many people will go on vacation this summer, many cities, regions and Member States depend on tourism and, naturally, are very worried”, said the official, in response to Lusa about possible impacts in the coming months.
