The population of Poland at the end of the first quarter fell by 155,000 year-on-year to 37.281 million, according to the Central Statistical Office.
The rate of actual population decline in the period January-March stood at minus 0.14 percent, meaning that for every 10,000 residents of Poland, 14 people were lost.
Preliminary data indicate that in the first three months of the year, the number of live births, as in the previous year, amounted to approximately 57,500.
Natural increase (the difference between the number of live births and total deaths) remained negative and stood at minus 54,500. It is estimated that as a result of natural population change in the first quarter, an average of 58 people per 10,000 population were lost (compared to 59 people a year earlier).
