The fifth ordinary session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Infrastructure and Static Energy of the African Union was held in the economic capital of South Africa, Johannesburg, during the period from 27 to 30 April 2026, with the participation of a delegation representing the Sahrawi Republic, led by Mr. Abah El Mad Abdallah, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sahrawi Republic to the Republic of South Africa.
This session was devoted to discussing a number of vital issues related to the future of the energy and infrastructure sector on the African continent, in light of the current international challenges. In this context, the repercussions of the conflict in the Middle East occupied an important part of the deliberations, as participants addressed its direct and indirect effects on energy supplies and prices, and its impact on African economies.
The meeting also discussed a number of side topics related to developing African energy strategies, with a focus on diversifying energy sources, enhancing investment in renewable energies, and achieving energy security in a way that supports sustainable development goals on the continent.
The session also witnessed the examination and adoption of the report of the expert meeting, which included practical recommendations aimed at enhancing regional integration in the fields of infrastructure and energy, and improving coordination among member states.
At the conclusion of its work, the committee ratified the “Johannesburg Declaration on Energy Infrastructure in Africa,” which stressed the need to intensify collective efforts to confront energy challenges, strengthen strategic partnerships, and support major continental projects aimed at achieving sustainable development and economic integration in Africa.
This session falls within the framework of the ongoing efforts made by the African Union to enhance cooperation among member states and develop effective policies that keep pace with global transformations in the field of energy and infrastructure.
