European democrats reacted after the announcement of the withdrawal of political support of P.S.D for the liberal prime minister Ilia Bolojan and initiation, along with GOLDof a no-confidence motion to be debated at the beginning of May.
The formation emphasized that this political development raises serious questions regarding the coherence of pro-European commitments and democratic stability in the member states. In their opinion, the collaboration between a party of the center-left and a far-right formation, known for its anti-EU discourse, is a worrying signal for the European political scene.
“You cannot condemn extremism at the European level, while you open the door to such alliances internally,” the representatives of the European democrats said, stressing that democracy needs real alternatives, not conjuncture agreements that can undermine the European project from the inside.
“In Romania, P.S.D — the country’s Social Democratic Party — withdrew its support for liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and now appears alongside AUR, a far-right, anti-EU party, ahead of a no-confidence vote scheduled for early May. This is not a tactical detail. It is a political choice. European socialists cannot denounce extremism in Brussels while opening the door to it domestically. Democracy needs alternatives, not conjuncture alliances with those who weaken Europe from within”, the European democrats wrote on Facebook.
PSD and AUR decided to submit a joint motion of censure against the Ilie Bolojan Government. Petrișor Peiu (AUR) and Marian Neacșu (PSD) declared, on Monday, April 27, that until this moment, “absolutely nothing” had been discussed about a future government, stating that, “as far as I know”, neither their leaders had made any move in this regard. About possible discussions including with others MPs from the opposition to support this motion, Neacșu pointed out that he is making “an appeal” to parliamentary colleagues “from all parties” who believe in “this approach”, who have text proposals that include the content of this motion and who support by signature and then by vote are welcome”. According to him, parliamentarians of PNL dissatisfied with Ilie Bolojan.
