A new holiday is coming for Ecuador, this time it will be for Labor Day, which will be modified this year. Next Friday, May 1, will mark the beginning of a holiday that, exceptionally in 2026, will extend for four consecutive days, from Thursday, April 30 to Sunday, May 3.
The extension of the holiday was ordered by President Daniel Noboa through the Executive Decree 354which establishes the suspension of the working day in both the public and private sectors during Thursday, April 30.
One of the main doubts between workers and employers revolves around whether this additional day should be recovered. According to the provisions of the decree, the answer is clear: will not be recoverable. That is, there will be no obligation to compensate those hours in subsequent days.
Labor Day, which is commemorated every May 1,It has its origin in the workers protests of 1886 in Chicago (United States)when thousands of workers demanded a fairer working day, marking a milestone in the fight for labor rights worldwide.
After that date, these are the holidays that will remain:
- Battle of Pichincha: Sunday, May 24 (moved to Monday, May 25).
- First Cry of Independence: Monday, August 10.
- Independence of Guayaquil: Friday, October 9.
- Day of the Dead and Independence of Cuenca: Monday, November 2 and Tuesday, November 3.
