The Bosniak party announced that the driver of the “Lalatović Travel” company discriminated against Marsela Sukić on religious grounds and that she was not allowed to sit in the selected seat on the bus.

BS announced that such statements are unacceptable for a country that cultivates multiethnic and civic values, and that even today “we are witnessing increasingly frequent divisions in society and open xenophobia and Islamophobia.”

On the occasion of the event, representatives of the Bosniak Party, Vice President of the Assembly and MP Mirsad Nurković, as well as MP Kenana Strujić Harbić reacted.

According to BS, Nurković pointed to a serious violation of human rights, referring to the Constitution of Montenegro, which guarantees dignity, freedom and equality to every citizen, regardless of religion or personal preference.

He called on the competent institutions to investigate the case and determine responsibility, in order to defend the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

He, as the vice-president of the Assembly, directed Potiv Sukić to be a guest in the Assembly of Montenegro.

“Headscarves are not a threat, they are an expression of freedom of religion and personal dignity,” said Nurković.

Strujić Harbić said that this event is a consequence of “increasingly open Islamophobia in Montenegro”. According to the BS, she said that this was not an isolated case, “but a consequence of the atmosphere that is being systematically built in our society”.

“If we keep quiet about things like this today, tomorrow we will have a society where discrimination will be the rule, not the exception. I expect an immediate reaction from the competent authorities and clear responsibility for this act. Citizen Montenegro must not keep quiet about this kind of discrimination and xenophobia,” said Strujić Harbić.

The BS called on the competent institutions to urgently investigate the case and determine responsibility, and they supported Sukić saying that, if necessary, “they will defend her hijab in our Montenegro”.
