PICRC welcomes new Researcher—Lauren Shea

The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to welcome Lauren Shea as a new Researcher. Lauren brings extensive experience in marine science, field operations, and expedition leadership.

Lauren holds a Master’s degree in Fisheries Economics from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of South Florida. Her professional background includes serving as Field Operations Manager at the University of Victoria, where she worked on kelp forest restoration and blue carbon research, as well as leading Arctic sailing expeditions in Norway and Svalbard.

She also spent two years as Chief Mate and Dive Instructor with Sea|mester, a study abroad program at sea, where she taught sailing, diving, and safety while managing vessel operations and maintenance. Her global experience spans marine research and vessel operations across the Caribbean, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and the Falkland Islands. In 2023, she was part of an all-women team that rowed unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean, winning first place in the women’s division.

Lauren first visited Palau in 2021 and was inspired by PICRC’s work. Since returning in 2025, she has been actively involved in the local community, volunteering with the Palau Sailing Association and participating in various ocean and outdoor activities.

At PICRC, Lauren is supporting Marine Protected Area monitoring and ocean acidification research, while also contributing to the development of the Center’s Field Safety Manual.

“I am excited to contribute to projects that support community-based marine resource management,” she said.

“Lauren is a great asset to the team and brings a variety of diverse experience,” stated PICRC’s Research Director, Geraldine Rengiil. 

PICRC looks forward to her contributions toward advancing marine research and conservation in Palau.
