During a press conference on the release of Andrzej Poczobut, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski did not mention, even once, the role of President Karol Nawrocki in the process. Standing beside him, the American envoy did so… in his very first sentence.
Polish journalist Andrzej Poczobut is now free. His release came as part of a prisoner exchange with Belarus, facilitated by U.S. services. Poczobut had been detained by the Belarusian regime on March 25, 2021, and had remained behind bars ever since.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski opened his remarks with the words: “Let us rejoice, we have him.” “This day would not have been possible without President Donald Trump, his special envoy John Coale, as well as all the officials of the State Department,” Sikorski said. He later thanked many individuals, but… omitted President Karol Nawrocki.
Meanwhile, the American representative referred to the origins of the entire effort to secure Poczobut’s release in his very first sentence. He clearly pointed to the role of the Polish president.
“This story goes back to September, when the President of Poland and the President of the United States met in Washington,” said John Coale, the U.S. Special Envoy for Belarus.
In doing so, the American envoy confirmed the findings of Niezalezna.pl.
A key moment in the fate of Polish journalist Andrzej Poczobut was last year’s visit of President Karol Nawrocki to the United States. It was following a personal request addressed to Donald Trump that U.S. services were given the green light to act, setting in motion a complex diplomatic process that ultimately ended in success, wrote our journalist Tomasz Grodecki.
