As he explains to “K”, the previous earthquakes, including the 4.7 Richter recorded on 14.12, were aftershocks. “An aftershock sequence is underway. We don’t know if the sizes will increase further. It is possible that the earthquake of 4.9 degrees was the main one”, he tells “K”.
As he points out, the specific focus in which the seismic activity is located has not concerned scientists with such large magnitudes. “But we can never rely entirely on the past,” he says and adds that an earthquake of 6.1 on the Richter scale had occurred in a neighboring town in Alonissos in March 1965.
Gerasimos Papadopoulos notes that pending the evolution of the phenomenon, “it is necessary for scientists to be careful in their assessments and for the inhabitants of Skiathos and neighboring islands to follow seismic protection measures”.
