The race for the 2027 FIFA presidency has just begun: current world football confederation president Gianni Infantino may not have officially announced his candidacy, but today he received a major gesture of support on his way to a fourth term.
During the FIFA conference in Vancouver, the 54 member confederations of CAF (Africa) unanimously announced that they would support his re-election. “CAF member federations have unanimously decided to support the re-election of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president for the 2027-2031 term,” the official statement read.
CAF represents about a quarter of the total electorate (about 210 votes).
The process of electing the president will take place during the 77th FIFA Congress in March 2027, which will take place in Rabat (Morocco) and the new president will be announced on the 18th of the same month.
The 56-year-old Swiss, son of Italian immigrants from Calabria and Lombardy, completed a decade at the FIFA helm on February 26.
According to the timetable set by the world football federation, those interested have until November 18 of this year to submit their candidacy.
