The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, Paulo Rangel, received the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize and the Sakharov Prize, in a meeting that served to reaffirm Lisbon’s commitment to the Portuguese community in Venezuela and the situation of political prisoners in the country.
During the meeting, held within the framework of Machado’s European tour, the head of Portuguese diplomacy stressed the priority that his government gives to the protection of Portuguese descendants residing in Venezuela and the defense of human rights, especially the release of political prisoners.
Rangel reiterated Portugal’s firm commitment to a transition process towards democracy and national reconciliation in Venezuela.
“Portugal, together with its European partners, practices dialogue with all interlocutors,” highlighted the minister, according to the official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE).
Machado’s visit to Portugal also included a meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, with whom he addressed the need for a democratic and free solution so that Venezuelans can decide their future.
