The daughter of Czech tennis players won the season’s premier major
American golfer Nelly Korda is the winner of the opening Big Four tournament of this season, the Chevron Championship in Houston.
The American born in Bradenton, Florida won the third major title of her career at the age of 27. With this success in Houston, she once again climbed to the top of the world rankings. Korda shot two under par on the final day to win the total with a score of -18. China’s Yin Ruoning and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit shared second place, five strokes behind.
Nelly Korda, daughter of former great Czech tennis players Petr Korda (winner of the Australian Open in 1998, among others) and Regina Rajchrtova (ranked 26th on the WTA in April 1991), led from the first day to the last. “To be honest, it’s not easy to have such a big advantage. Psychologically, it’s a big challenge, because you can’t relax too much,” she assessed Nelly Korda.
More successful than sister Jessica
Despite some trouble on the 12th hole, which she played a stroke over par, her lead was never really threatened on the final day of the tournament. She responded with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes and kept her rivals at a safe distance until the end of the tournament.
Nelly Korda became a professional golfer in 2017, and since then she has won as many as 17 tournaments at the highest level of golf in the world, the LPGA Tour. Her six-year-older sister, Jessica, who has won six tournaments in her career so far, also competes in this competition.
