A delegation from Turkmenistan participated in a meeting of the Council of Trade Unions of Central Asian Countries, held in Tashkent, according to the press service of the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, a decision was made to transform the council into a confederation.
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan became members of the new confederation, with Turkmenistan retaining observer status. The organization’s charter was approved during the meeting.
“I am confident that transforming the council into a confederation will enhance and grant our organization the status of a fully-fledged and competent entity in relations with international organizations and international trade union associations,” stated Kudratilla Rafikov, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan, who was elected General Secretary of the new structure.
The meeting participants formed a 15-member General Council of the Confederation—three representatives from each of the five member countries—as well as an Executive Committee, which included the heads of national trade union centers. The Confederation’s staff will consist of four people, including the Secretary General.
The Council of Trade Unions of Central Asian Countries was established in November 2021 at the initiative of the trade union federations of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
