It will be a Super Sunday for rugby league fanatics in the National Capital District and Central as the Gas Resource Central Dabaris clash with the Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers in Round 3 of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
The double-header continues at 4pm when the Kroton Hela Wigmen face off against the NPL Enga Mioks at the same venue.
Adding to the excitement, local musician Taita Maraga will entertain the crowd throughout the day, while fans can also enjoy fixtures from the Under-17 academy boys and girls and the National Youth Competition Under-19 boys, featuring Dabaris against Vipers. In the U17 division, Central Academy will meet NCD Academy.
Both Dabaris and Vipers are locked neck-and-neck on the competition ladder after two rounds, making Sunday’s 2pm clash crucial for leadership.
Victory alone may not be enough, as margin matters with the Hela Wigmen close behind.
The Kroton-sponsored Wigmen are tipped for a comfortable outing against the Mioks in the main game.
All other Sunday matches will be held at Goroka’s National Sports Institute, Eastern Highlands, where Mendi Muruks play Waghi Tumbe, Lae Snax Tigers lock horns with Kandes, and Goroka Lahanis host Gulf Isou in the afternoon’s main match.
Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League chief executive officer Stanley Hondina said in a statement on Wednesday that Round 3 is centred around mental health, discipline, and character, emphasising that strength is also about resilience, composure and leadership.
“Men in League (round) reminds players that true strength is shown in how they respond to pressure and how they carry themselves every day,” Hondina said, adding that respect, self-control and teamwork improve performance and also contribute to stronger communities.
