On-line/The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas kicks off its 25th anniversary celebrations with a webinar dedicated to examining the evolution of press freedom in Latin America over the last quarter century, as well as the threats and challenges currently facing journalists in the region.
The meeting, moderated by Rosental Calmon Alves, founder of the Knight Center in 2002, will bring together Carlos Lauría, executive director of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA); Cristina Zahar, program coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ); Artur Romeu, director of the Latin American office of Reporters Without Borders; and Alejandra Gutiérrez Valdizán, co-founder and director of the Guatemalan agency Ocote.
The conversation will address the deterioration of the conditions for practicing journalism, the pressures against independent media and the mechanisms necessary to defend freedom of information.
The activity is part of International Education Week at the University of Texas at Austin. Participation is free, upon registration, and will take place in English, without simultaneous interpretation. Link to register.
