PARAMARIBO — The United States (US) will invest an additional three million US dollars in security cooperation with Suriname. The money will be spent on purchasing equipment for the Suriname Police Force, expanding professional training for judicial officers and strengthening institutional capacity to combat transnational organized crime, the US Embassy said in a press release.
The diplomatic post indicates that the additional budget is the result of the fruits that the cooperation has already borne. “These additional three million US dollars reflect the strength of the cooperation between the United States and Suriname,” said American Chargé d’Affaires Rosalyn Wiese. “We have already seen real results this year: from new equipment for the Surinamese police to training for more than eighty officers. This comprehensive agreement will build on that progress and help Suriname tackle the criminal networks that threaten both our countries.”

Wiese and Minister Harish Monorath of Justice and Security signed the amended agreement on Wednesday. This falls under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI). According to the embassy, the US will continue to work with Suriname and regional partners through CBSI to combat transnational crime, strengthen regional security and build safer communities. The program in Suriname is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.
