PARAMARIBO — The uncontrolled influx of gold seekers and its consequences for the Matawai community has driven the traditional authority to call on the government’s help to work on organizing the Moeroekreek area. Granman Lesley Valentijn proposed on Tuesday during consultations with the Ministries of Natural Resources (NH) and Regional Development (RO), at which Zijin/Rosebel Gold Mines was also present, to clearly demarcate the area and register the people who work there. However, the grand chief emphasized that the measures must not endanger the livelihoods of the local population.
NH Minister David Abiamofo, who is currently deputizing at RO, stressed that the mining activities were originally enabled at the request of the traditional authority to create employment and strengthen the economic position of the Matawai community. However, the situation has “developed differently” than initially agreed. While approximately 250 people were originally expected to attend, the number of attendees is now estimated at approximately eight thousand. “The large influx has led to challenges in the areas of safety, environmental protection and control,” it is agreed.
“The economic benefits of the activities must actually benefit the Matawai community”

On Tuesday, the traditional authority drew attention to the consequences of this development for the community. Captain Wilson Willems emphasized the need to restore peace and order. The government promised support in restoring order and control in the Moeroekreek area.
Zijin/Rosebel Gold Mines has indicated that it is willing to continue the collaboration with Matawai until the end of 2026, provided that the agreements made are respected. In addition, it is being investigated whether an alternative location can be made available for the mining activities.
Abiamofo emphasized that the economic benefits of the activities must actually benefit the Matawai community. This requires clear agreements, compliance with rules and cooperation between all parties involved. On November 9, NH, RO, the traditional authority and Zijin/Rosebel Gold Mines will discuss the progress of the action points.
