Typhoon warnings issued in the northernmost islands of the Marianas
Currently, Category 4 Super Typhoon In-fa is roughly 930 miles east of Guam, which previously took a beating from Champi. Forecasters expect that island’s residents will avoid a back-to-back encounter with another of these monster storms, saying that despite passing to the north, conditions there are “anticipated to be generally fair and favorable,” including for Rota, Tinian and Saipan.
However, In-fa is threatening the Marianas. This would be the fourth super typhoon in seven months to impact the island chain.
The islands most at risk are Agrihan, Pagan and Alamagan in the far northern Marianas. Typhoon Warnings are now in effect for those islands, which means they are expected to experience typhoon conditions of 74 mph or more sustained winds.
Within 24 hours islanders there can expect damaging tropical storm force winds. Kuam News reports that meteorologist Landon Aydlett at the National Weather Service Guam has warned that “sea and surf conditions will be hazardous across the Marianas coastal waters into the weekend with particularly large swell across the CNMI due to Typhoon In-fa,”
