The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has intensified efforts to improve climate-smart greenhouse production in Dominica.
The initiative included specialised training for 30 participants, comprising farmers, greenhouse operators, contractors, agricultural extension officers, young people, and students pursuing agricultural studies. The sessions were facilitated by FAO Protected Agriculture Specialist Jervis Rowe.
The training focused on improving greenhouse construction, strengthening management practices and identifying suitable agricultural inputs to enhance crop production.
As part of the exercise, greenhouse facilities in Massacre, the Kalinago Territory and La Plaine were assessed to determine where improvements could be made to infrastructure, operational management and productivity.
Discussions were also held with input suppliers to identify suitable sweet pepper and tomato varieties, as well as fertilisers appropriate for protected cultivation.
The collaborative effort aims to help farmers establish more efficient greenhouse systems, improve yields and strengthen agricultural opportunities across Dominica.
By promoting improved production techniques and climate-smart practices, the Ministry and FAO are seeking to support more resilient and productive farming operations while equipping agricultural stakeholders with the knowledge and resources needed to meet future challenges.
