On Thursday 12 November, the Danish Parliament will first consider the agreement between the USA, Greenland and Denmark.
Thursday 12 November at At 10.00 the members of the Folketing must first consider the agreement between the USA, Greenland and Denmark on amending and supplementing the agreement on the defense of Greenland. It appears from The Norwegian Parliament’s weekly schedule. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will present the agreement in Parliament.
Among other things, the agreement opens up the possibility of American defense areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig and contains recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
Treatment in Inatsisartut
The defense agreement was first discussed in Inatsisartut on 12 October and subsequently sent for consideration in the Foreign and Security Policy Committee.
During the first reading, the naalakkersuisoq for foreign affairs, Múte B. Egede (IA), said, among other things, that the agreement was the result of an important diplomatic effort in a serious security political situation.
Despite criticism from Naleraq, who believes that the agreement gives the USA extensive rights without ensuring Greenland a fixed financial payment, it seems that the agreement will be adopted by Inatsisartut, as support for the agreement has been immediately expressed from both IA, Siumut, Demokraatit and Atassut.
The second reading of the agreement in Inatsisartut is set for 3 November. First at the thirdthe treatment there must be a vote on security and defenceagreementn.
