A viral meningitis outbreak caused by enterovirus has been reported on the island of El Hierro, affecting three children aged three, six, and seven, who are students at CEIP Tigaday in La Frontera. All three required hospitalization, with a favorable evolution. The first case presented symptoms in early October, and the last in mid-month. Two children have already been discharged. The Public Health protocol has been activated, including contact tracing and alerts to healthcare professionals for early detection. Transmission is suspected to be person-to-person via the fecal-oral route, possibly through asymptomatic carriers. Hygiene and prevention measures are being reinforced.
