“If we want to be an equal partner to the United States, defend our way of life, and build a secure future – we must first become strong ourselves.” stressed former prime minister and PiS deputy leader Mateusz Morawiecki in a post on X. “There is no time for more appeals and declarations – it is time for action. Join us in the fight for a secure future for Poland, Europe, and a strong Transatlantic Alliance,” he urged.
“I never had any illusions about Russia”
Mateusz Morawiecki wrote that “the Transatlantic Alliance, the foundation of global security since the end of World War II, requires a thorough overhaul. For years, Europe functioned in a comfortable illusion, and the U.S. accepted it.”
“America largely paid for and guaranteed the security of the Old Continent, while Europe built prosperity, expanded trade, rebuilt its economies, and protected its markets. Today, under the geopolitical pressure of the Sino-Russian tandem – and with growing U.S. pressure in response – this arrangement is breaking down. I have never had any illusions about Russia. I have always warned leaders of the free world that Putin is not a partner, but an adversary – a tyrant who seeks to rebuild an empire and is counting on the weakness of the West. I have consistently conveyed this message to our American partners as well. For Poland, this is, of course, a challenge – but also a great opportunity. We must rise to the occasion. This is what I spoke about in my interview with The Washington Post,”
he noted.
The former prime minister emphasized that “the PiS government set an example—taking responsibility for the security of NATO’s eastern flank and record-high defense spending.”
“Let us build an economic NATO”
“Today, we are the third-largest army in the alliance and a model for other European countries. But Poland, even with a strategic partnership and friendship with the United States, cannot bear the burden of security alone. We need something more. We must reform the alliance and build an economic NATO. We must not allow America to be pushed out of Europe. A strong U.S.-EU bloc accounts for around 50% of global GDP, sets the rules of the global game, and serves as a real counterweight to China and Russia. That is why Europe must change – less ideology, more economy. It should follow Poland’s example. If we want to be an equal partner to the United States, defend our way of life, and build a secure future, we must first become strong ourselves. There is no time for more appeals and declarations; it’s time to act! Join us in the fight for a secure future for Poland, Europe, and a strong Transatlantic Alliance,”
Morawiecki concluded.
The Rozwój Plus Association
In mid-April, Morawiecki informed the media that he had established the Rozwój Plus Association, which has already been joined by several dozen PiS MPs. His initiative sparked a heated exchange among politicians from different factions within PiS, along with accusations that the former prime minister aimed to split the party.
Ultimately, however, an agreement was reached. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński stated on Tuesday that a seven-hour meeting with the former prime minister had resulted in a compromise: the association would not be dissolved but would operate “as if within the party.” He added that during last week’s meeting of the Presidium of the PiS Political Committee, the idea of establishing an Expert Council was proposed, to which members of Morawiecki’s initiative would be invited.
