The family of Juan Carlos Marrufo Capozzi requested the Venezuelan authorities for humanitarian measures and his urgent release, given the deterioration of the health of the Italian-Venezuelan political prisoner. and lack of medical care which, according to reports, persists.
They base their concern on a medical report issued on August 31 by the specialist who treats Marrufo at the El Ávila Clinic. The document describes a critical clinical picture and indicates pre-existing pathologies since 2022, including severe urinary obstructive syndrome, bilateral testicular pain of strong intensity, prostatic growth, left renal lithiasis, bilateral renal cysts, inguinal hernia and bilateral varicocele.
The medical evaluation indicates that Marrufo needs to be treated urgently by a specialist and undergo preoperative studies to avoid further complications and determine the treatment he requires.
They denounce serious health risk due to lack of medical care
The family denounces that the medical indications have not been followed. For this reason, on September 8, the private defense presented a request to the First Court of First Instance in Enforcement Functions with Jurisdiction in Terrorism for Marrufo to be transferred to a medical center under security measures.
As an alternative, the lawyers asked that a team from the National Service of Medicine and Forensic Sciences (Senamecf) went to the place of confinement to evaluate him. The delay in the response of the judicial and prison authorities was described by relatives as “cruel and inhumane” treatment.
The medical situation adds to concerns previously expressed by human rights organizations about Marrufo’s detention conditions. His family recalled that Amnesty International has documented his case and considers him a prisoner of conscience along with his wife, María Auxiliadora Delgado.
The organization, they said, has demanded the immediate release of both and has warned about Marrufo’s unexpected transfer to the El Rodeo I prison, as well as the difficulties he has faced in accessing the examinations and treatments indicated by his doctors.
Given the risk they attribute to his state of health, family members insisted that Marrufo must receive comprehensive medical care and access surgical treatment to determine his condition.
“His life is in danger; medical care is an inalienable human right and the State is directly responsible for any fatal outcome,” said the family, which demanded “humanitarian measures and freedom” for Marrufo.
