
He Peruvian Press Council (CPP) and the organization’s Ethics Court recalled that the protection of the identity of children and adolescents victims of violenceof all kinds, constitutes a fundamental duty of journalistic practice.
In a statement, it indicated that the dissemination of information that allows the identification of a minor victim of violence, particularly sexual, violates essential principles that should govern information activity and can cause a new form of victimization.
“No scoop, live broadcast or circumstance typical of journalistic work justifies ignoring this reinforced duty of protection, whether on digital or physical platforms”he expressed.
“The CPP and the Ethics Court consider it important that the media permanently review and strengthen their protocols for the coverage of cases involving minors, particularly when it comes to victims of sexual violence. Likewise, they recognize the importance of rectifying and assuming responsibility when errors occur”he added.
As recalled, six students from the Almirante Guise Naval High School, reported as alleged sexual offenders of a 16-year-old adolescent, remain hospitalized in the Lima Youth Diagnosis and Rehabilitation Center, known as Maranguita.
For their part, the police released the other four detained teenagers as they found no direct involvement in the violent act. They will face the investigation process in freedom, but under protective measures in favor of the affected student.
The Third Family Court of Lima ordered four months of preventive detention against six defendants. Judge Roxana Palacios Yactayo ordered the maximum precautionary measure in order to ensure the presence of the minors during the investigations.
The complaint for the crime against sexual freedom occurred after the return of a school sports tournament on September 15. The six fifth-year high school students investigated, as well as the four released and the victim who reported the incident, are 4th and 5th year high school students of the Naval High School.
