With candles, flowers and photographs, a group of neighbors, candidates and supporters participated this Saturday in a vigil in the Plaza Mayor of Nuevo Chimbote to remember the journalist and candidate for the Regional Government of Áncash, Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, known as “China Polo”, who was murdered during a campaign activity in Caraz.
With candles, flowers and photographs, a group of neighbors, candidates and supporters participated this Saturday in a vigil in the Plaza Mayor of Nuevo Chimbote to remember the journalist and candidate for the Regional Government of Áncash, Susy Isabel Aponte Polo, known as “China Polo”, who was murdered during a campaign activity in Caraz.
The rally took place hours after the attack that occurred in the province of Huaylas. Aponte Polo was participating in proselytizing activities when she was attacked with a firearm. The incident also left five people injured and one citizen was arrested by the Police as allegedly involved in the crime. The circumstances and motive for the attack remain under investigation.
During the vigil, attendees lit candles and placed flowers and photographs of the candidate as a show of solidarity with her family and friends.
The tribute also brought together members and supporters of the political organization Partners for Áncasha group for which Aponte Polo was running for the Regional Government in the 2026 Regional and Municipal Elections.
The murder occurred a few weeks before the elections scheduled for October 4. The Ombudsman’s Office expressed concern about the crime and requested protection measures for candidates participating in the current electoral process.

The Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Violence against Women and Members of the Huaylas Family Group began a preliminary investigation against those responsible for the death of Aponte Polo.
After the removal of the corpse, the body of Susy Aponte was transferred to the Huaraz Morguewhere the corresponding forensic procedures will be carried out.

According to information provided by local media in Áncash, the Necropsy is scheduled for Sunday morningas part of the proceedings aimed at establishing the circumstances of his death.
Aponte Polo was a journalist and carried out a communication activity before joining the electoral race. Days before the attack, he had posted a video on his social networks in which he claimed to have received threats against his life. In that publication he maintained that he had received calls from three prison establishments warning him about an alleged attack.
