Not all votes in Belize carry the same political weight, and a new court challenge is pressing the Elections and Boundaries Commission to explain what it is doing to correct that imbalance. Some constituencies have far more voters than others, creating concerns about whether Belizeans receive fair and equal representation in the House of Representatives. Redistricting is intended to level that playing field by redrawing electoral boundaries, but despite repeated promises from the Briceño administration, the long-awaited reform remains unfinished. Government first pledged to complete the exercise during its initial term and renewed that commitment after winning a second term. Now, with another deadline approaching, social activist Jeremy Enriquez is turning to the courts to determine whether the commission must tell the public exactly where the process stands. News Five’s Paul Lopez reports.

Redistricting remains unfinished despite years of promises. The Briceño administration committed to the exercise early in its first term, then made the promise again after winning decisively at the polls in March 2025. Prime Minister John Briceño has now set December 2026 as the deadline, but questions remain about whether the process is on track.

The 2025 deadline is long gone, and 2026 is fast slipping away.

As the redistricting deadline draws closer, social activist Jeremy Enriquez is turning up the pressure. He has taken legal action, raised public awareness and repeatedly challenged the Briceño administration to honor its commitment. Now, Enriquez has filed a Freedom of Information request with the Elections and Boundaries Commission, asking a simple but pressing question: how much progress has actually been made?

“The public, the Belizean public has a right to know what is going on. First their response was that it was asking for too much information. Secondly, they mentioned that they are not bound to provide any information to me or the public, because it is contrary in their argument to the Freedom of Information Act.”
According to Enriquez, the commission says it is not required to answer FOIA requests. Enriquez is back in court, taking the Elections and Boundaries Commission and the Attorney General to task as he continues pressing for redistricting.

“Therefore it is saying in effect that I have no right to ask them for information and they are not bound to provide information. We are challenging that matter in court, because we need clarification. We know that they are bound to provide information, but we need that very clear clarification by the court, for the public to know they have rights to access information from the Election and Boundaries Commission and Department. They are paid by the public purse. They are a public entity making decisions that will affect the entire nation. And the very least they can do is to provide information on the progress of our redistricting.”
This latest legal battle will establish whether the public can seek information from the Election and Boundaries Commission through a FOIA request. But it still leaves one key question unanswered: has redistricting begun, and can it be completed with only three months left in the year? Reporting for News Five, I am Paul Lopez.
