PARAMARIBO — The subject of Traffic Education will be officially introduced at primary school from the beginning of the next school year. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture has promised this to the Road Safety Institute (VVI). Purcy Landveld, deputy director of Data, Education and Information at the VVI, calls this step “extremely important” because it introduces children to the rules of the road from an early age. “It will become a permanent subject at the GLO schools from the beginning of October. We have recently implemented it at the daycare centers. We have written a manual through which children at daycare centers receive traffic lessons in a playful way. We have extended this line to the GLO level,” says Landveld. the True Time.
The lessons will be provided in all years of primary education. The aim is to eventually provide traffic education permanently at secondary schools for seniors. Landveld: “We are working on a lot of things because a lot has to be done to guarantee safe traffic. But we have faith that everything will turn out well.”

According to him, a second important point is the rules that will soon be introduced for e-Bikes drivers. “Our Driving Act has already been amended by parliament. We are now working on our Driving Decree to include some technical matters,” Landveld explains.
For example, drivers of e-Bikes will be required to wear a crash helmet. In addition, electric bicycles will have to be inspected before they can be ridden on the street. Directors will have to be at least sixteen years old. “We want to start announcing through the media in October, because enforcement will start from January 1, 2027.”
Landveld also says that the VVI is working seriously with other authorities on introducing a mandatory driving license for moped riders. “We will soon train the driving schools in the field of theory for moped riders. There is already a concept for a manual.” The aim is to officially start classes no later than January 2027.
