The Bank of Greenland in Qaqortoq and Maniitsoq: Local advice creates trust

    SPONSORED CONTENT

The Bank of Greenland’s dedication to presence and local understanding is fundamentally about the people sitting behind the desk. For branch managers Inge Hansen in Qaqortoq and Ulla Karlsen in Maniitsoq, banking is inextricably linked to their own personal history and strong roots in their home town. It is precisely this deep sense of home that enables them to provide genuine, trustworthy and in-depth advice “For the benefit of Greenland”

In Qaqortoq, branch manager Inge has truly returned to her roots. She originally trained for a Bachelor of Law (BA) in Nuuk in 2022 and worked as a case manager, but was spotted by a colleague associated with the Bank of Greenland. Since Inge found land registration both logical and easy, she sent an unsolicited application to the bank’s production department and got the job.

Later, she and her husband, who both grew up in Qaqortoq, chose to move home from Nuuk so that their son could have a closer bond with his grandparents. Inge started working in Qaqortoq as a remote production employee, but when the opportunity arose to become a local branch manager, she took the plunge with a desire to create long-term stability and trust in the local community.

For Inge, leadership is first and foremost about daring to be completely yourself. She emphasizes that she is always herself, regardless of whether she is at work or taking time off. She also emphasizes that the internal leadership training has helped her to step into character even more and develop her leadership qualities.

In a small society, trust is absolutely essential, and knowledge of the customers’ life history ensures that the bank can provide extremely individual advice. This anchoring creates noticeable value for the customer, for example when the branch helps young, local customers confidently achieve their dreams of everything from buying a car and boat to real estate.

    Setting boundaries with a smile

Balancing between being a private person and a branch manager is usually managed with a good and open dialogue. When Inge participates in a traditional coffee meeting or other gatherings, there is a natural understanding of when she is in the role of branch manager and when she is a private person.

More than a bank: In Diskobugten, the branch managers have the local community at heart

It helps to create strong relationships and mutual trust – both are valuable in a small community. That openness is hugely appreciated by customers. The branch experiences that even customers who have been refused sign off with high scores in the annual satisfaction surveys, precisely because they experience much deeper and more present advice than expected.

The presence is also seen to a large extent in the bank’s physical services. The Qaqortoq branch has retained the classic cash register. Although it is complex to run, Inge sees it as an essential support for the whole of South Greenland, which makes a huge difference for e.g. shepherds or citizens who have traveled all the way from Nanortalik after the summer to exchange foreign currency. When the working day is over, Inge recharges the batteries on the mountain with her dog, Buster, and dinner is preferably reindeer tenderloin with blueberry sauce.

Leadership and dreams at a distance

In Maniitsoq, branch manager Ulla Karlsen is strong proof that local heart blood can also be put into practice through well-planned distance management. Ulla lives in Nuuk on a daily basis with her 9-year-old daughter, but was born and raised in Maniitsoq.

    Ulla Karlsen, branch manager Maniitsoq

Ulla started her career at the Bank of Greenland in 2007 in the production department and has progressed steadily over the years. She took the finance course, worked as a customer advisor and housing advisor, before taking over as manager of the branch in Maniitsoq in January 2026.

She spends approximately four days a month physically in the city with her highly independent and committed team, and the rest of the time is managed via close, daily online contact. Even though a lot takes place at a distance, Ulla always feels at home when she lands, and she uses her deep local knowledge very actively to understand the customers’ needs.

She knows about the seasonal fluctuations that characterize the city’s active fishermen and the growing tourism industry, and she also collaborates with the organization Arctic Circle Business to constantly keep her finger on the pulse of the development of the business world.

For Ulla, it is fundamental that all customers are treated equally and that she manages to lead as a good role model in her leadership role. This permeates the advice, where she ensures that dry figures are not only looked at, but that the bank takes the reality of the customer into account to a great extent.

This insight means that the bank can quickly and competently engage the customer – for example, when it plays a decisive role in helping the city’s young people get off to a good start in buying houses or co-operative housing. When free time is enjoyed, it is spent sailing and reindeer hunting, and in the kitchen one really likes to conjure up Greenlandic provisions and local ingredients such as kvan.

Both Inge and Ulla have a strong love for their home town and an ability to translate this feeling into present and trustworthy advice. Regardless of whether everyday life takes place physically in the branch in Qaqortoq or is managed remotely from Nuuk, the focal point is always a deep respect for the individual customer’s reality.
