SAN MARINO – The waste-to-energy plant in San Marino is scary, even though at the moment it is only a hypothesis, although announced in institutional offices. For some years now we have been fighting against some proposals for the installation of waste burning systems, which have been put forward by private individuals, even in a less than transparent manner. The reasons for our opposition are all in the statement from the Mycological Association:
– A notable environmental and landscape impact for a small territory like ours: which Castle will want to have a waste-to-energy plant on its territory? – A unsustainable traffic of trucks full of wastewhich will lead to more pollution and inconvenience
– A considerable increase in pollution of soil, air and water, because there is no such thing as a zero-emission waste-to-energy plant!
– And finally a disheartening carelessness of politicians who make haphazard proposals without adequate information.
Furthermore, reading the verbose article that appeared in Serenissima Sera, which describes the waste-to-energy plant as “the Titan’s industrial business”, reeling off a string of numbers and considerations on the enormous wealth capable of generating, so much so that we ask ourselves why a waste-to-energy plant isn’t built in every Italian municipality, we get to the real point of the matter: a private company will own and manage the infrastructure!! It matters little that the absolute majority belongs to the State, too many times with certain industries we have seen how much the State is subservient to them thanks to a complacent policy! So we ask ourselves: who needs the waste-to-energy plant? Perhaps to those who had already asked for its installation for some time?
We want to hope that politics will better evaluate certain proposals that have such a strong impact on the population, on the environment and on the territory, that it will be able to capitalize on the many virtuous experiences in terms of waste (reduction, separate collection, recycling) and that it will have, in this case truly, the ambition of becoming an example in terms of circular economy, energy efficiency, respect for health and the environment.
