The Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, informs the public that effective immediately, the issuance of licenses for open burning has been suspended until further notice.
This action comes amid growing concerns about environmental degradation, public health risks, and the increased likelihood of uncontrolled fires, particularly during the dry season. Open burning is known to contribute significantly to air pollution, adversely affects respiratory health, and poses serious threats to property, agriculture, and natural ecosystems.
The ministry notes that this measure forms part of a broader national strategy to promote sustainable land management practices and strengthen climate resilience.
Farmers, landowners, contractors, and members of the public are strongly encouraged to adopt safer and more sustainable alternatives for land clearing and waste management, including composting, mulching, and mechanical clearing. Technical assistance and guidance will be provided through Extension District Offices, the Forestry Department, and the Fire Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force.
The Fire Department, along with other enforcement agencies, will increase monitoring and enforcement efforts. Individuals found engaging in unauthorised burning will be subject to penalties under existing laws and regulations.
