PARAMARIBO — Employees of Canawaima Management Company are upset about several disturbances that they believe were committed in particular by chairman Richenel Vrieze. After a short stoppage on Monday morning, the workers are demanding that the Supervisory Board (SB) be replaced immediately.
The employees have now resumed work, but the demand still stands. According to association chairman Dayanand Dwarka, this has now been submitted to Minister Raymond Landveld of Transport, Communications and Tourism (TCT), under which the company falls.
“The minister has promised via an app message that the council will be replaced. So we have good hope that that will happen.”
According to the association chairman, there are many indications that some members of the council may have been guilty of a conflict of interest. For example, chairman of the commissioner Vrieze is said to have awarded services to a company directly affiliated with him. In addition, there are invoices showing that higher amounts are submitted and paid out.
“The minister has promised through an app message that the council will be replaced. So we are hopeful that that will happen,” Dwarka said during a press conference held on Monday afternoon. “Some abuses have been noted. The men have spent a lot of money that the company could put to better use,” a source told the newspaper.
Dwarka states that the association is closely monitoring the matter. In the meantime, Minister Landveld has also announced that he will put things in order at Canawaima this week.
