ANNIE CATHERINE BREWSTER who was born in St.Vincent in 1858 and passed in 1902 recently had her image incorporated in the Coat of Arms of the Worshipful Company of Nurses in the United Kingdom.
She was one of the first African-Caribbean persons to pursue a career in nursing in London. She trained and worked at the then London Hospital (now the Royal London) from 1881 until her death.
Annie’s passing was much mourned and her service greatly admired and in 2019, the Worshipful Company of Nurses was advised that her grave in the City of London Cemetery was in a state of neglect and disrepair. The Worshipful Company of Nurses worked with the Royal British Nurses’ Association, historian Stephen Bourne, the Corporation of London and Barts NHS Trust to bring about the restoration of Annie’s grave and to remember this remarkable nurse. A ceremony to mark the restoration of her grave was held in 2022.
