PARAMARIBO — A 35-year-old homeless man set fire to an empty house on George Eelstraat on Sunday. The suspect, AP, was arrested that same day by the police at the Geyersvlijt station.
The police received the report around half past two in the afternoon. The preliminary investigation has shown that the house is uninhabited and that the owner resides abroad.
According to the police, the suspect gained access to the building by destroying the shutters and glass windows of the front door. He then set a fire in one of the bedrooms of the stone low-rise house.
Thanks to decisive action by local residents, the fire was extinguished in time, limiting the damage to part of the ceiling in the bedroom. There were no personal accidents.
After his arrest, the suspect was taken to the police station for arraignment. After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, AP has been placed in custody pending the investigation.
