Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, announced that a subpoena for the investigation was sent to his apartment in Russia.
“The apartment in Russia where I lived 20 years ago received a summons in the name of the suspect Durov PV.” Perhaps they suspect me of defending Articles 29 and 23 of the Russian Constitution, which guarantee the right to freedom of speech and secrecy of correspondence. I am proud of my guilt!” wrote Durov on his Telegram channel on April 22.
It is not clear who sent this message to Durov. Judging by the photo he posted on the Telegram channel, this is a notification of a registered letter from the Russian Post. It is not clear why the document says “suspect” instead of just the recipient’s first and last name.
In February, Durov announced that a criminal case was initiated against him in Russia under the article “supporting terrorist activity”. “It’s a sad picture of a country that is afraid of its own people,” said Durov while commenting on it.
“Rossiyskaya Gazeta” and “Komsomolskaya Pravda” were the first to report that the criminal case against Durov is being investigated. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies did not officially provide information about this.
Pavel Durov has not lived in Russia for a long time and has settled in the United Arab Emirates.
