The Barbados Police Service (TBPS) has announced the appointment of Barry Hunte and Adrian Broomes to the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police, effective July 3. It also announced the appointment of Stephen Herbert, David Welch and John Boyce to the post of Assistant Commissioner of Police.
These appointments strengthen the senior command team at an important time for the organisation, as TBPS continues to advance its operational priorities, enhance public confidence, and support the professional development of its officers.
Deputy Commissioner Barry Hunte has served in senior leadership roles within the service, including head of Special Branch and, most recently, responsibility for special operations and management services. He has also been recognised for his focus on leadership, standards, performance, change management and the effective execution of the service’s policing plan. Hunte completed the College of Policing Executive Leaders Programme in Coventry, United Kingdom, an intensive 19-week programme designed to prepare senior officers for executive leadership.
Deputy Commissioner Adrian Broomes has had key roles and responsibilities in disaster response and coordination and has continuously engaged in executive leadership training. He is currently enrolled in the College of Policing Executive Leaders Programme in Coventry, United Kingdom.
Assistant Commissioner Herbert is the senior officer responsible for human resources and administration. In this executive leadership capacity, his duties heavily focus on workforce development, strategic training, and inter-agency collaboration. He has spearheaded major recruitment initiatives and oversees the entry, swearing-in, and guidance of incoming trainees.
Assistant Commissioner David Welch has served in senior ranks of the organisation and has been assigned responsibility for change management and technology services. His appointment supports the service’s continued focus on modernisation, innovation and organisational effectiveness.
Assistant Commissioner John Boyce has also served at senior command level, including responsibility for crime. His experience will continue to support the service’s work in strengthening investigative capacity and public safety outcomes.
Commissioner of Police Sonia Boyce congratulated the officers on their appointments, stating: “I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Hunte, Mr. Broomes, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Welch and Mr. Boyce on their appointments to the senior command team of The Barbados Police Service. Commissioner Boyce added that the appointments reflect confidence in the officers’ ability to help guide the organisation through its next phase of development, noting that the senior command team will remain focused on accountability, community engagement, operational readiness and service excellence.
