The pedal-assisted washing machine, developed by Remya Jose in the Indian state of Kerala, stands out as an alternative solution, especially in rural areas where electrical infrastructure is inadequate and financial resources are limited.
ELIMINATES DEPENDENCE ON THE ELECTRIC GRID
According to the statements made by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), the device completely eliminates dependence on the electrical grid. This feature enables the machine to be used uninterruptedly in rural areas where power outages occur frequently and the use of white goods places an additional burden on the household budget.
LOW PRODUCTION COST
According to the data included in NIF’s official award report, the production cost of the project in question was stated as approximately 2000 Rupees (approximately 980 lira). The device, which has a portable design, allows the user to do laundry and do physical exercise at the same time, thanks to its pedaling mechanism.
It was stated that the device provides a local alternative for rural families in budget and energy management, as it enables household chores to be carried out without the need for modern infrastructure requirements.
