Seven citizens of Moldova received fines from €1,000 to €10,000 for applying graffiti depicting coffins on buildings in Paris, which are related to the war in Ukraine.

The verdict was handed down on April 16 by the correctional court of Paris. Five persons involved received fines of €1,000, one – €7,000, and the alleged organizer – €10,000. None of them was present at the meeting held on February 23.
At the same time, the court acquitted them on the main charge – “demoralization of the army”, for which the French prosecutor’s office demanded prison terms.
“We are satisfied with this decision, which rightly excludes the offense of demoralizing the army, which has lost its relevance since the Algerian War, and we hope that it will become a precedent,” defense lawyers Emmanuel de Dineschen and Louis Gloria said.
The incidents occurred in June 2024 in Paris. On June 7, graffiti with the image of a coffin and the inscription “French military in Ukraine” appeared on the buildings of the National Assembly of France. 15 days later, similar signs appeared on the AFP and Le Figaro buildings with the slogans Stop the death now! (“Stop the death now!”) and Mriya Ukraine (“Dream of Ukraine”). Also, in other places of Paris, graffiti with a coffin with airplane wings and the inscription “Mirage for Ukraine” was applied.
The case is part of a series of investigations into possible foreign interference in France. These include, in particular, the painting of stars of David in the Paris region, red handprints on the Holocaust Memorial and the placement of pig heads near mosques.
Experts and special services regularly link these actions to Russia, which denies any involvement.
In parallel with the graffiti with coffins in France, a similar incident was investigated, when at the foot of the Eiffel Tower five coffins were discovered with the inscription “French soldiers in Ukraine”.
The motive of the detainees is still unclear, but the inscription on the coffins probably refers to the discussion about sending Western troops to Ukraine – which France was the first to initiate.
Paris later had to refute more than once Russian fakes about “French mercenaries” in Ukraine.
