The unemployment rate remains stable – at least seasonally adjusted. The employment agency ADEM and the statistics authority Statec reported this on Monday morning. Accordingly, the seasonally adjusted rate is 6.3 percent, as in January and February. In absolute numbers, however, the authorities are recording an increase. A total of 20,491 Luxembourg residents were registered as looking for work in March. That is 8.4 percent more than in March 2025.
As in previous months, the increase primarily affects the best qualified job seekers, explain ADEM and Statec. When it comes to age groups, a significant increase can be observed among 30 to 44 year olds. And when it comes to sectors, the biggest increases are in the areas of “secretarial and assistance”, IT and accounting.
Big increase in volunteers from abroad
10,068 people were completely unemployed – a decrease of 7.1 percent compared to the previous year. The number of non-resident job seekers is growing. At the end of March, 4,354 non-residents were registered with the ADEM as looking for work: That is an increase of more than 25 percent compared to the previous year. However, the category of people who have registered as looking for work in Luxembourg without receiving financial support – i.e. purely voluntarily – is growing particularly dramatically. Their number grew by 44 percent compared to March 2026. A total of 1,919 people from abroad were looking for jobs in Luxembourg at the end of last month.
But there are also figures that could indicate a slight recovery in the labor market. In March, employers reported 3,983 vacancies to ADEM. That is 18.8 percent more than in March 2025. A total of 7,517 positions are vacant – at least 10.2 percent more than a year ago. (sen)
