Anyone traveling on the A3 from Zurich to Sargans will drive past the run-down rest stop in Mühlehorn. Now the Lost Place is being cleaned up, she writes “Southeastern Switzerland”. Wind and weather have taken their toll on the former restaurant; in recent months, parts of the concrete ruins have repeatedly spilled onto the highway. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) sounded the alarm back in December and asked the municipality of Glarus Nord to check the condition.
The landowner was informed about the growing danger and how to proceed and was asked to comment. At the same time, the municipalities received offers for a static review. If there is no response, Glarus Nord will award the contract to an engineering firm, according to “Südostschweiz”.
No agreement on the selling price
The owner is Heinz Peter Moravcik, an 85-year-old, seriously ill entrepreneur from Toggenburg. Moravcik wanted to sell the rest stop to Astra for 1.5 million francs. A little over a month ago he reduced the price to 1.3 million francs. A representative of Moravcik asked Federal Councilor Albert Rösti to intervene, according to “Blick”. Rösti now replied: According to “Blick”, in the letter he expresses his regret about the situation that has arisen around the former rest stop.
Astra had previously made an offer of 800,000 francs for the property, which Moravcik rejected. “The federal government is obliged to handle taxpayers’ money responsibly,” writes Astra upon request. Federal Councilor Rösti also made this clear in his letter. The current purchase offer required is significantly higher than the effective value of the property, which has been in poor structural condition for years.
“The price demanded by the owner is based on a hypothetical potential value for which there is no legal basis,” says Astra. And: “A purchase at this price is therefore out of the question.”
Astra suggested two options to the owners: on the one hand, a re-examination of the previous offer of 800,000 francs, and on the other hand, an independent external estimate, whereby the determined market value would be considered the binding sales price. Astra is prepared to cover the costs of this estimate. The decision on how to proceed now rests with the owners. There is no agreement in sight because, according to “Blick”, Moravcik is still sticking to his offer of 1.3 million francs.
