Despite the recent dispute with US President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sees no threat to relations between her country and the USA. The cooperation between the two countries is based on “such a long and solid history” that it cannot be called into question by “a discussion on social media,” said the right-wing head of government at an event organized by the newspaper “La Verità” in Rome.
In the past few days it has been between Trump and Meloni tensions arose. The trigger was the US President’s claim that Meloni had begged him for a photo at the recent G7 summit in Évian, France. He felt sorry for her. Meloni objected sharply and described this as “completely made up”. In another exchange of blows on social media, she reprimanded him again.
Allusion to memes
“Sometimes we really talk about foreign policy as if it were Temptation Island,” Meloni said. Numerous memes have been posted on social media in recent days showing Meloni and Trump around a campfire during the television show.
Meloni also emphasized that, despite the dispute, he did not want to change Italy’s foreign policy orientation: “Italian foreign policy will remain the same as it has been for the last 80 years. To maintain strong relations with the USA and the EU, because the strength of the West rests on this.” Aside from the recent dispute, cooperation between the two countries has also gone well in recent weeks and months, she explained.
