Around 90 sheep died in Posočje: it is assumed that the animals were struck by lightning
More than 90 sheep died in the area of Krasje vrh between Bovec and Kobarid. The death is believed to be the result of a lightning strike, the Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection Administration announced.
The Krasji vrh agrarian community informed the Food Safety, Veterinary and Plant Protection Administration about the death today. The administration’s inspectors carried out an on-site inspection and found that it was a herd of sheep belonging to fourteen different owners, members of the aforementioned agrarian pastoral community.
The death of the sheep was first noticed by the shepherd, who periodically inspects the flock. As stated in the press release by the administration, most of the dead animals are on a steep and difficult-to-access scree. There are visible signs on the corpses that indicate death due to a lightning strike, including burns on the body.
According to the established facts, the Krasji vrh Agrarian Community was allowed to leave the carcasses on the mountain in an inaccessible area.
The sheep were driven to the mountain pasture in the period until June 20. Before leaving for grazing, they were properly treated against parasites and showed no signs of illness, the administration explained.
