Iran attacked American sites in the Gulf in response to American strikes targeting the country, according to what Iranian official media reported on Saturday, after Washington accused Tehran of attacking one of its commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Several countries have condemned Iran’s new targeting of Bahrain’s territory, describing it as a “flagrant violation of sovereignty and a clear violation of international law.”
In turn, an advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader stressed that “the response to any violation of the memorandum of understanding will be swift and firm.”
This exchange of fire is the first known of its kind since the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran on June 17. This has raised questions about efforts to keep the vital waterway open as Washington and Tehran negotiate to reach a final settlement to the war that began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The US Central Command (Centcom) said that the recent US strikes, which targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar sites, came in response to “unprovoked aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces that clearly violated the ceasefire.”
In turn, Iran considered that the strikes carried out by the United States constituted a “flagrant violation” of the memorandum of understanding concluded between the two countries aimed at ending the war in the Middle East.
