A terrible incident took place in Taratala on Wednesday afternoon when the roof of a three-storey godown collapsed. As the afternoon progressed into the evening, the rescue work was not over yet. After visiting the scene, Shuvendu held a press conference. He gave strict instructions there. Shuvendu said that the building plan of the godown that collapsed on that day was approved on January 17, 2026. Initially, the plan was flawed. And after this incident, the state government decided to inspect all the buildings under construction in Kolkata. Shuvendu said, “All the plans sanctioned during the previous government’s tenure in the Kolkata municipal area, in the presence of the Municipal Commissioner and the Minister of Public Works and Urban Development, will be done later in Howrah and Bidhannagar. I have directly instructed the municipality that all the construction of buildings, especially commercial constructions, constructions under water bodies, which were approved during the previous government’s tenure, will be stopped till July 31. Shuvendu also said, “The Department of Home Affairs, Civil Defence, Kolkata Police, and Municipal Corporation will form a team. The chief secretary will give instructions. The team will prepare site plan, building plan, spot visit and report. Kolkata Metro work, work on leased land in port area… I will bring it under investigation with their cooperation. Those who are in order, they will be able to work from August 1. The work of emergency services will be out of this.”
Shuvendu said SMPA is the owner of the land where the roof of the godown collapsed at Taratala. He also stated that the lease of the land was in the name of Shambhunath Behara, Partor of Behara Brothers. The Chief Minister will make a statement in the Assembly tomorrow. What legal action will be taken, will also be informed tomorrow. Initially, Kolkata Municipal Engineers said that the godown plan was faulty. Technical department people are working. They will report by night. All the approved plans, which are under construction, will be audited before the BJP government comes to the state. Although this directive is for Kolkata for now, it has been informed that audit work will be started in Howrah and Bidhannagar in a stepwise manner.
