AeroMetro, line 1: passenger area will begin construction in the coming days

The structure that currently stands out in Spain Square and that has aroused the curiosity of motorists and pedestrians does not correspond to the finished station of the Aerometeras some citizens have perceived.

This was explained by Klamcy Solórzano, executive coordinator of the AeroMetro System on the part of the Municipality of Guatemala, who clarified that the visible infrastructure is part of the electromechanical system responsible for operating cable transportation.

“What you see right now is not the station. Users will not enter there; it is a space intended for electromechanical equipment and only the technical personnel in charge of maintenance will have access,” he indicated.

The coordinator explained that the construction of the passenger station will begin in the next few daysbeing more precise the last week of June 2026, with the assembly of an independent structure that will support the boarding and disembarkation areas.

Plaza España Station will mobilize up to 6,500 users

The Plaza España stationidentified as station 1 of the project, is considered one of the strategic points of the first line of the AeroMetro.

According to municipal projections, the terminal has the capacity to serve up to 6,500 users during peak hours.

The AeroMetro Line 1which will connect Plaza España with El Trébolwill have four stations and an estimated time of eight minute ride:

    • Station 1: Plaza Españazone 9
    • Station 2: Tecún Umán
    • Station 3: CAMIP
    • Station 4: Clover 1with connection to Line 12 of the Transmetro and the AeroMetro line 2.

How to get on a catwalk at the Plaza España station

According to the coordinator, the experience for users will be similar to accessing an elevated pedestrian walkway.

The future station will have a platform of approximately 550 square metersequivalent to a surface close to 11×50 meters.

According to Solórzano, the design will allow the boarding and alighting of passengers, in addition to facilitating the pedestrian connection between both sides of the road.

Regarding its dimensions, Solórzano explained that:

    • The station floor will be located 7.20 meters above street level.
    • The distance between the ground and the lowest element of the structure will be 5.50 metersallowing the passage of heavy transport.

    Accessibility and services

The representative of the Municipality reported that all the stations of the AeroMetro Guatemala will include:

    • Health services
    • Elevators at both ends of the station
    • Ramps and specialized signage
    • Spaces adapted for people with disabilities
    • Access for bicycles and strollers

The design complies with the guidelines established in the Conadi 2024 Universal Accessibility Manual for People with Disabilities.

    Facades with heritage value

Another aspect that continues in the development phase is the architectural façade of the Plaza España stations and Tecún Umán.

Because both are located in areas with heritage and urban value, the Municipality works in coordination with the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) to define the architectural elements that will be incorporated.

Among the proposals analyzed is the incorporation of elements inspired by the work of a renowned Guatemalan artist, although the final decision is still being evaluated.

    Schedule remains for 2027

Solórzano assured that the project maintains the original schedule and that construction would conclude in mid-2027.

Subsequently, a period of approximately 12 weeks of international testing and certifications before authorizing the transportation of passengers.

During this stage, the cabins will circulate with test loads to verify the correct operation and safety of the entire infrastructure.

In 90 days there will be visible changes in other seasons

The mayor of the capital announced that in the next 90 days, important changes will begin to be observed in other AeroMetro stations, similar to the electromechanical infrastructure that currently stands out in Plaza España.

For his part, Klamcy Solórzano explained that the ceiling seen today in Plaza España corresponds to this new assembly phase and announced that this same process will begin at station four, located in El Trébol.

“That is the change that Guatemalans will see, because the assembly of the electromechanical system is going to begin,” he stated.

In addition, he invited the population to visit the official website of the project, where the progress and news of the work will be shared.

The Trébol Complex will have the largest station

Although Plaza España will be one of the most important stations of the first urban cable car in the country, it will not be the largest.

The Station 4 of the Trébol Complex will have approximately 2 thousand 200 square metersfour times more surface than the Plaza España station, and will begin construction in the coming days. This terminal will function as a strategic connection point between lines and with the Transmetro system.
