Experts who examined the cherries marketed with the logos of premium brands more closely in laboratories and customs laboratories reported that consumers were deceived by a systematic illusion.
According to the report shared on international food safety platforms, the packaging of world-famous high-quality, premium cherry brands, especially from the Southern Hemisphere (such as Australia and Tasmania), are copied exactly. Poor quality, ordinary and cheap cherries are placed in imitation boxes.
Special resin and polishing coatings with a risk of bioabsorption are applied to ordinary cherries to give the impression of premium fruit. Thanks to molecular sprays that hide rotting during travel, the fruits look perfect until the consumer throws the product into the basket.
Consumer associations revolted: “This is how they deceive us”
Conscious consumers who shop at luxury organic market chains in the UK and Asian markets noticed that when fruits come into contact with water at home, the chemical layer is removed and deformed fruits emerge from underneath.
The pioneer of a food awareness movement that has a great impact on social media, citing the customs reports, said in his statement: “They play with the genetics, packaging and appearance of the fruit in such a way that we cannot understand it without seeing it with our own eyes. They examined the cherries more closely and the bitter truth came out; this is how they deceive us.”
Global supply chain in danger
Experts state that the fake fruit market (especially in premium kiwis, citrus and cherries) is not only an economic loss, but also that pesticides of unknown origin threaten global public health. Consumers are advised to scan the QR code certificates of authenticity on the luxury segment fruits they purchase with their phones.
