Brandon Marsh, Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber homered, Jesús Luzardo pitched seven solid innings and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Tuesday night.
In a matchup between starting pitchers facing their former teams, Luzardo (6-4) was impeccable. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and only gave up two runs on five hits, striking out nine batters.
The same can’t be said for Miami’s Tyler Phillips, who allowed all three home runs to his former teammates and a two-run triple to Bryson Stott. Phillips (1-2) allowed eight runs, six hits and three walks in four innings.
Marsh hit his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to extend the Phillies’ lead to 5-0 in the second inning. It was his fourth consecutive game at Citizens Bank Park with a home run.
Bohm, who also had an RBI single, also hit his ninth home run of the season, hitting a 2-0 sinker pitch from Phillips 447 feet into the left-center field stands.
The last time Phillips faced the Phillies last September, he caught a line drive from Bohm to end the inning, and then, visibly excited as he walked off the field, he threw the ball back and it went in Bohm’s direction. Phillips later apologized to the Phillies third baseman, saying it was involuntary.
Schwarber regained the major league home run lead by hitting his 25th home run off Phillips in the fourth inning. It is the ninth time in his career that Schwarber has reached 25 home runs in a season, including the five seasons he has played in Philadelphia.
Esteury Ruiz was the only Marlins run scorer, hitting a two-run homer off Luzardo in the seventh inning.
It was the first time the Marlins lost two consecutive games in June.
