Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC), in collaboration with the Forestry Department, of this country’s Ministry of Agriculture, is conducting a targeted invasive goat removal operation on the islands of Battowia and the Pillories between April 14 and June 10, 2026.
This operation forms part of an ongoing effort to protect native wildlife, restore habitat balance, and ensure public safety, states a notice from EPIC, an independent non-profit entity founded in 2000 with the mission of protecting the Caribbean environment through research, restoration, education and advocacy.
Invasive goats have caused significant harm to local biodiversity, and without intervention, continued grazing threatens critical seabird nesting habitats and native plants and animals on these islands. The operation is being carried out by licensed wildlife management professionals using strict safety protocols, including clearly marked exclusion zones, adherence to all environmental regulations, and coordination with local law enforcement including the Coast Guard Service and Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF). EPIC explained that the operation is part of a multi-year ecological restoration project conducted under a research permit from the Forestry Department.
Members of the general public are advised to avoid landing on Battowia and the Pillories during the operation and to follow all posted safety notices. Public cooperation is essential to ensure the safety and success of this important conservation effort.
