On the occasion of Lake Ohrid Day – June 21, the sports and educational event “Together for the Future of the Lake” is being held in Ohrid this weekend, which unites young athletes, ecologists and nature lovers in order to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the lake.
As part of the event, a one-week training camp “Ohrid Winds” is organized for the first time, intended for young sailors and skiers. The organizers are the Association for Sports Sailing “Aquatika Yachting” from Ohrid, the Ski Club “Dime Flejta” from Tetovo and the Sailing Club “Nov Vetar” from Skopje.

According to Stefan Stavrev from Aquatica Yachting, the purpose of the event is to develop love and respect for Lake Ohrid through sports, education and socializing.
– These two days we will celebrate Lake Day together through the sports event ‘Together for the future of the Lake’. We will exchange experiences, we will discuss the organization of club regattas and we will organize a one-week training camp ‘Ohrid Winds’, where young people will learn the basics and secrets of sailing – said Stavrev.
The participation of the young skiers from Tetovo, who this summer replace the sporting challenges of the snow trails with sailing on the waters of Lake Ohrid, gives the event a special symbolism.
– The snow can wait. We came to Ohrid to learn to sail, to respect the Lake and to discover the natural beauties of Macedonia. We believe that young athletes can successfully develop in several disciplines and create new champions – emphasized Ljubomir Petkovski, secretary of the Ski Club “Dime Fleita”.
The activities include the Sailing Club “Nov Vetar” from Skopje, which provides sailboats for practical training.
The president of the club, Vladimir Petrovski, emphasized that connecting sailing and skiing is a natural step because both sports require a sense of balance, movement and use of natural forces.
– We provide two sailboats for training and competitions. Our goal is for ‘Ohrid Winds’ to grow into a traditional event that will gather young athletes in Ohrid every year – said Petrovski.
The event was also joined by the members of the diving club “Amphibia”, who carried out an environmental action to clean the beach “Kai Divono”.
The organizers expect “Ohrid Winds” to become a recognizable sports-educational event that will connect young people from different sports, promote active life on the water and contribute to the preservation of Lake Ohrid, one of the most important natural treasures in Europe.
