Caracas/The NGO Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) reported this Tuesday the death of at least three prisoners within a period of 72 hours in this country, bringing to 28 the deaths it has documented between April and June of this year in different prisons in the country.
“We demand that the regime ensure the integrity of those deprived of liberty, comply with Venezuelan legislation and guarantee medical care, otherwise it means condemning them to death,” the organization said in a publication in X.
The OVP indicated that so far in June it has recorded the death of five prisoners in prisons in the states of Miranda, Táchira and Zulia, the latter two bordering Colombia.

Earlier this month, the observatory indicated that a total of 181 prisoners died in Venezuela’s prisons and dungeons during 2025, most due to lack of medical care.
The NGO then warned, during the presentation of its annual report, that this represents an increase of more than 50% in these cases compared to the previous year.
The observatory indicated, based on a registry of 85% of the detention centers in the country, that 158 of the deaths occurred in prisons and 23 in police cells.
Likewise, he assured that 151 of the deaths occurred due to lack of medical attention.

Likewise, the OVP warned about suicide attempts and reiterated the complaint about cruel, “inhuman and degrading” treatment in Venezuelan prisons.
At the end of April, the NGO Criminal Forum reported that 454 political prisoners remain imprisoned in Venezuela, including 41 foreigners or dual nationals, when an amnesty law limited to certain crimes and specific periods of time remains in force in the country.
