The event, one of the signature heritage moments of the Crop Over season, will transform Queen’s Park into a living cultural village, offering patrons an afternoon of performance, pageantry, workshops, food, craft, music and meaningful tribute.

Rooted in the historic plantation tradition that marked the end of the sugar cane harvest, the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes continues to honour the labour, resilience and creativity of the people whose work helped shape Barbados’ social, cultural and economic identity. This year’s Gala will build on that legacy with a broad, family-friendly showcase designed to celebrate the past while embracing the evolving spirit of the Festival.

One of the major highlights will be the Cultural Procession Parade, a vibrant presentation of Barbados’ living cultural heritage, featuring colourful costumes, rhythmic movement and traditional characters in a powerful celebration of Barbadian identity.

The procession will include stiltwalkers, Shaggy Bears, Mother Sally, Tuk Bands, Donkey Men, Plantation Workers, the Barbados Landship, drummers, cheerleaders, costumed folk characters and other performers, each adding a distinct layer to the story of Barbados’ cultural expression.

The Sons of God Apostolic Church will also offer the traditional Blessing of the Last Canes, maintaining the spiritual and ceremonial significance of the occasion.

This year’s Gala will also feature the presentation of six large masquerade costumes, created under themes that reflect Barbados’ history, heritage, folklore, artistic imagination and national milestone of 60 years of Independence. The costumes include Keeper of the Canes by Trevor Chase under the King of Crop Over theme; the Queen of Crop Over theme by Neil Stanley; Harding’s Fiery March by Gordon Ashby under the Mr. Harding theme; Kaiso, Kaiso by Carla Gittens; Rise of the Ancestors by Troy Burgess under the Emancipation theme; and Continuum: Folklore to Future by Wayne Smith and Adrian Burnett under the Barbados at 60 theme.

Throughout the day, patrons will also be able to engage directly with cultural artisans through workshops and demonstrations in hand painting, head tying, traditional sweets, natural fibre crafts, mini Sailors’ Valentines, caricatures, recycled jewellery and basketry. A special interactive activity will invite the public to contribute to the production of a large Sailors’ Valentine in celebration of Barbados’ 60th anniversary of Independence.

Additional attractions will include performances by The Barbados Police Service Band, a Secondary School Mass Choir, a Steelband Orchestra, and the concert presentation “60 Years of Calypso.” Patrons can also look forward to photo opportunities with performers, traditional costume displays, the Queen’s Park Gallery Exhibition, food and craft vendors, and the National Cultural Foundation’s Creatives Hub.

The Gala will also feature Intangible Cultural Heritage activities, including sticklicking demonstrations and Maypole workshops and classes, helping to keep important traditional practices visible, accessible and engaging for new generations.

Families are especially encouraged to attend, with a large kids’ playground, interactive cultural activities and a welcoming community atmosphere forming part of the day’s experience. There will also be an HIV/AIDS free grooming booth on site.

A key moment of the event will be the presentation to outstanding Sugar Workers and Crop Over Stalwarts, recognising the contributions of those who have helped preserve, build and sustain the traditions that continue to define the Festival.

The National Cultural Foundation is inviting Barbadians and visitors alike to come out and experience an afternoon that brings the spirit of Crop Over into full view — from the cane fields and folk traditions to calypso, masquerade, craft, music and community celebration.

The Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes Gala takes place on Saturday, July 4, from 2 p.m. in Queen’s Park.
